Brian Shiers
Welcome to Aligned Mind, I’m glad you’re here. Researching mental health care providers is an important step in choosing someone who inspires confidence and creates hope for meaningful change. I’d like to be that person for you.
My psychology philosophy is simple: Everyone has within them a fundamental aspect of mind that instinctively seeks safety, clarity, autonomy, connection with others, purpose and meaning. For many of us, this part of the mind is obscured, distorted, or in some cases has never even been recognized. But, it is there in you - it is the very nature of your mind’s essence.
Through the connection we build together, we’ll explore your history, your worldview, and your ideas about your struggles, and how they relate to your emotions, feelings, and behavior so your self-awareness grows and your understanding of what prevents your happiness becomes more clear. When we understand what’s in the way, the path towards living a more meaningful and joyous life appears.
The following modalities will inform how we’ll use our time:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy*
Narrative Therapy
Attachment Psychology
Evidence-Based Mindfulness
Embodiment & Somatic Work
Please feel free to schedule a short call to see if we’d be a good fit for one another.
*Although DBT is a comprehensive, evidence-based treatment that everyone could benefit from, it was originally developed for people who commonly have a trauma history and who experience pervasive emotion dysregulation, extreme challenges in relationships, and frequently fall into depression and suicidal thoughts. In some cases these symptoms can result in a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).
If you come to me to treat BPD, as your primary DBT therapist, I would engage you in understanding the treatment, collaborating with you on your commitment and participation, and when you’re ready, refer you to a weekly DBT Skills Group as an addition to our weekly sessions in order to fulfill the comprehensive DBT Program format (1hr/wk of individual therapy, 2hrs/wk of group skills work).
My primary partner in skills group work is Westside DBT.
